This is the power of photography — the ability to capture the connections we have with each other, and then honor and remember it no matter how much time goes by.
A Citizens Ballroom wedding is a great fit for couples who love historic architecture but want a space that feels fresh and inviting. Located in downtown Frederick, Maryland, this former bank has been thoughtfully restored into a wedding venue that blends original details with modern finishes. As a Baltimore wedding photographer, I love venues that have character built right in, and Citizens Ballroom has plenty of it.
Matthew and Angela’s wedding was a wonderful example of what makes this venue special. Between the beautiful natural light, the original bank vault, and a meaningful Chinese tea ceremony honoring their parents, their day had so many personal touches.

Any Insider Tips for a Citizens Ballroom Wedding?

One of my favorite things about Citizens Ballroom is the combination of historic charm and beautiful light. The building dates back to 1908 and was renovated in 2021, preserving many of its original details while creating a space that works beautifully for modern weddings.
The large windows are a huge highlight for me as a photographer. They let in so much natural light, which creates a soft, flattering look in photos. I love how the light falls across the room and makes everyone look radiant. Good natural light can make such a difference throughout a wedding day, especially when we’re photographing people indoors.
I also love that the venue is entirely indoors. Maryland weather can be unpredictable, and having a beautiful space for your ceremony and reception means you don’t have to build your plans around the possibility of rain.

The history of the building is what makes Citizens Ballroom stand out. It was originally a bank, and the restoration keeps so much of that character intact. You’ll find soaring 30-foot coffered ceilings, original architectural details, and the feature everyone wants to see: the bank vault.
The vault is such a fun detail to incorporate into your wedding. It gives the space a story that guests might not expect from a ballroom, and it makes for a memorable photo backdrop. I love venues where you can capture something unique to the location rather than relying on decor alone to make the photos interesting.
Citizens Ballroom also has a flexible design. The modern finishes allow couples to bring their own vision to the space while the historic details give the room plenty of personality. Whether you lean classic or want to introduce more contemporary details, the venue offers a beautiful foundation to work with.

Citizens Ballroom offers approximately 6,100 square feet of event space, with seating for up to 165 guests. The main level accommodates up to 130 guests for dining, with additional seating available on the mezzanine.
Couples can host their ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception at the venue, keeping the celebration in one location. Tables and chairs are included, and the venue welcomes any licensed and insured caterer. You can bring in vendors you already love or explore the venue’s trusted partners if you’d prefer a more streamlined planning experience.
Another standout feature is the full-day rental window. Rentals run from 8 a.m. to midnight, giving you plenty of time for getting ready, portraits, and the celebration itself without squeezing everything into a short window. The venue also includes a complimentary dressing suite for couples to use throughout the event.

The natural light from the large windows is one of my favorite features to photograph. It creates a beautiful setting for portraits.
The bank vault is another must-have spot. It’s such a distinctive part of the building, and it adds a little history and personality to a wedding gallery. The architecture and high ceilings also give us plenty to work with when photographing the room and the details you’ve chosen for your day.
I especially appreciate that the venue itself offers so much variety. You can have classic portraits in the natural light, then use the vault and architectural details for photos that feel connected to the location.

I think Citizens Ballroom is a great choice for couples who appreciate historic spaces but don’t want a venue that feels dated or overly formal. The original architecture brings character, while the updated finishes make it easy to personalize the room.
It’s also a wonderful option for couples who want an indoor wedding. You can enjoy the atmosphere of a historic building without worrying about an outdoor ceremony being affected by the weather.
For couples who care about making their wedding feel personal through catering and design, the venue’s flexible policies offer room to bring your own ideas to life.

The cost of a Citizens Ballroom wedding can vary depending on your guest count, catering choices, and the vendors you select. Since the venue welcomes any licensed and insured caterer and offers a flexible vendor policy, you have room to build a wedding experience that fits your priorities and budget.
The venue also includes tables and chairs, with no additional fees for using its house furnishings. For the most accurate pricing and details about what’s included in your rental, I recommend reaching out to Citizens Ballroom directly.

My biggest tip is to make the most of the natural light. When you’re planning your timeline, leave room for portraits near the windows, especially earlier in the day when you want that soft, flattering light. As your Baltimore wedding photographer, I can help you decide when to use the space based on your ceremony time and the look you’re hoping for.
I’d also encourage you to think about how you can incorporate the venue’s history into your photos. The vault is such a distinctive feature, and it would be a shame not to take advantage of it!
Most importantly, use the flexibility of the venue to make the day feel personal. Matthew and Angela did this beautifully with their Chinese tea ceremony. During the ceremony, they honored both of their parents through this meaningful tradition. Watching them show their love and respect for their families was such a touching part of the day. It was a reminder that the most memorable wedding moments aren’t always about the decor or the setting. They’re about the people and traditions that make the celebration meaningful to you!

If you’re drawn to historic architecture, beautiful natural light, and a venue you can make your own, Citizens Ballroom is well worth considering. Matthew and Angela’s wedding showed how the space can provide a beautiful setting while still leaving room for the traditions and personal moments that matter most.
As a Baltimore wedding photographer, I love photographing weddings throughout Maryland, including Frederick. I’d love to help you document the meaningful moments of your Citizens Ballroom wedding, from your portraits in the natural light to the moments you’ll want to remember with your family.
